Expose specially treated sheets of paper to
ultraviolet light and heat and you can quickly and cheaply make prototype
biochips. Patterns defining the channels and reservoirs of a biochip can be printed, photocopied or hand-drawn on the paper. Exposed areas become hydrophobic and unexposed areas remain absorbent. Paper biochips could make medical tests more widely available in less-developed regions of the world.
