Description:  This computer simulation image shows four time intervals in the progress of a light pulse through a photonic crystal. The blue and yellow spots represent positive and negative components of the pulse's electric field. The pulse enters the crystal from the left in the top frame, is stored briefly in the middle frames, and exits to the right in the bottom frame.
