Description:  The top image shows a pair of crossed nanotubes. In the bottom image, the tubes are welded. This happens when a beam of electrons converts hydrocarbons that naturally collect on the surfaces of the tubes to amorphous carbon. Fusing the tubes this way also allows electricity to pass between them.
