Description:  These microscope images show portions of a butterfly wing. The microscope views are, clockwise from top left, optical, atomic force, higher-resolution atomic force, and atomic force in acoustic mode. The acoustic mode provides more detail by vibrating the microscope's probe tip at its resonant frequency, which makes it more sensitive.
